San Javier Clinic
The San Javier Clinic was started in 1995 by Hank Vagt and Jim Rector after learning of the medical and dental needs in the village of San Javier from the Rotary Club in Loreto, Baja California, South. No governmental agency in Baja California provides for the health needs of this community.
Loreto ia about 650 miles south of Riverside, California. San Javier is 20 miles west of Loreto via a one lane dirt road. San Javier is located in a small valley in the mountains and is know for it's 300 year old church Mision San Javier. The village of San Javier has a population of less than 100 people, however the clinic draws patients from farms and ranches as far as 25 miles away.
Four times a year, doctors, dentists, ophthalmologists, nurses and interpreters are flown in private aircraft to the city of Loreto.
The doctors deal primarily in internal medicine such as arthritis, skin diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension and common problems such as colds and influenza.
The dentists perform restorations to decayed teeth and frequently do extractions, some requiring lengthy surgery.
Thanks to donated glasses, the ophthalmologist has made it possible for children to read and many older people to see clearly for the first time in their lives.
